Other budget documents

Capital budget
Information that you can get from a capital budget document includes: An explanation of a project, the status of a project (especially important for ongoing, multi-year projects), and the purpose and/or impact of a project. Capital budget documents will sometimes, but not always, organize the projects by department.
  • What are the current capital projects?
  • What are the upcoming projects?
  • It would also be helpful to get a sense of the capital budget for the police department for the last 5 years since it tends to vary year-by-year.
School district budget

(typically separate from city operating budget)

  • Does the school district have contracts with the police department? If so, for how much?
  • What is the security budget (whether or not it includes contracts with police)? Sometimes police and security contract amounts are not reflected in the district budget, but can be found in other documents, such as School Board meeting minutes.
Parks department budget

(usually part of a locality’s operating budget document but occasionally separate)

  • Does the Parks department have contracts with the police department? If so, for how much?
Public transit/transportation budget

(often but not always a separate operating budget from the locality’s)

  • Does the public transit department have contracts with the police department? If so, for how much?
  • Does the transit department or agency have its own police department? If so, you may want to do a budget analysis for that agency.
